Orlando can be traced back to 1838 during the infamous Seminole wars the US army fought against local Indians. The US army originally built a fort South of the current Orlando city limits and called it Fort Gaitlin.
In 1840 a development outside the fort was established by the Jernigan family. The area was called Jernigan and the US postal service opened a post office in the area in 1850.
There are several stories as to how Orlando got it’s name. The most established is one of the Soldiers who died fighting the native Indians was named Sentinel Orlando Reeves who is believed to buried by Lake Eola.
Orlando was very much a rural area during the Civil War and having suffered from the Union blockade was reconstructed and incorporated in 1875. From 1875 to 1895 Orlando thrived on its citrus production.
The real estate market really started to flourish in Orlando in the 1920s which was ended abruptly by the great depression and several hurricanes. In the 1940s Orlando became a hub for military application development during world war II seeing companies such as Martin Marietta become well established.
Most historians will agree the most significant event in Orlando’s economic history was the arrival of Walt Disney World in 1965 and its opening in 1971.
Real estate development thrived with the arrival of Disney and the park’s impact affected all of Central Florida including Lake, Volusia, Seminole, Osceola and Lake County.
Orlando has become world famous as a mega destination resort. Other parks have also become well established such as Universal Studios, Sea World and Gator Land to name but a few. Orlando has also begun to establish itself as a technology hub for virtual reality applications.
Downtown Orlando has undergone several changes over the years. Church Street station was originally a set of commercial warehouses next to the railroad, but was developed into an entertainment complex by Bob Snow and enjoyed record popularity in the 1980s and 1990s. Church Street has since been sold and bought several times, but has since seen much revitalization most notably with the development of “55 West” a luxury condominium with mixed use project.
Condominium development from 2000 to 2008 in Orlando boomed encouraging a mass of people to move into the city center. In addition, many of the homes in the downtown area have undergone extensive renovation over the last 10 years.
Orlando’s history has come a long way in just the last 140 years and continues to evolve as it develops into a major US metropolitan city in the world famous Sunshine State.
