how to slow foreclosure

Can somebody tell me the truth about foreclosure?

Back in April I was in the hospital and fell behind on my mortgage. I am a month behind and late with the next. After returning to work I began making payments again although I have not been able to get the late fees caught up. I went to boa to make my payment and they refused it. After speaking with someone they said they would send me some paperwork to try and get reinstated (whatever that means). in order to be reinstated I would have to come current and pay attorney fees. My question is can they forclose that quickly? can I slow the process? I have also thought of it being a scare tactic, if so how do I get them to back down or work with me. If I could afford attorney fees I would be current.

They will not foreclose if you come current.
